Aggregate Material on Demand

#57

Gravel being unloaded onto a pile via conveyor belts.

#57 Gravel

 Brief Description

#57 gravel is one of the most commonly used construction aggregates in the United States.

It typically consists of crushed stone ranging from approximately ¾ inch to 1 inch in size.

Because the stones are relatively uniform and contain little fine material, #57 gravel allows excellent drainage while creating a strong, stable base.

Key Benefits

  • Excellent drainage — Allows water to flow easily through the material.
  • Strong and durable — Creates a stable foundation for construction projects.
  • Versatile — Used in residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.
  • Easy to install and spread — Works well with machinery or manual installation.
  • Low maintenance — Does not easily compact into mud when properly installed.
  • Widely available — Commonly produced by quarries and aggregate suppliers.

Common Uses

  • Concrete aggregate and ready-mix concrete
  • Driveways and gravel roads
  • Drainage systems and French drains
  • Septic system drainage fields
  • Foundation and structural drainage
  • Pipe bedding and backfill
  • Landscaping and decorative ground cover
  • Retaining wall drainage
  • Construction site stabilization

FINES

A large pile of sand on a gravel surface.

Fine Base

Brief Description

Fine sand, commonly used in paver installation,is a processed aggregate material made of small, uniform particles of natural or manufactured sand. Depending on the application, contractors may use concrete sand, masonry sand, bedding sand, or polymeric sand.

For traditional paver installation, fine sand is commonly used to create a smooth, level bedding layer beneath the pavers and, in certain applications, to fill the joints between pavers.

Key Benefits

  • Provides a smooth, level surface for proper paver installation.
  • Helps distribute weight evenly beneath the pavers.
  • Allows precise leveling and adjustment during installation.
  • Improves the finished appearance of the paver project.
  • Can assist with drainage, depending on the sand type and installation method.
  • Versatile material for construction, masonry, landscaping, and hardscaping.

Common Uses

Paver and Hardscape Applications

  • Bedding layer underneath concrete pavers
  • Leveling layer for patios and walkways
  • Joint filling between pavers
  • Pool deck installations
  • Driveways and outdoor living areas
  • Retaining wall and hardscape projects

 Other Construction Uses

  • Masonry and mortar mixing
  • Concrete production
  • Pipe bedding
  • Trench backfill
  • General construction projects
  • Landscaping and grading
